The World Uses a Variety of Different Energy Sources
The world uses a variety of different energy sources. Fossil-based fuels such as oil, natural gas and coal–accounted for more than 81 % of all energy consumed in 2018. Renewables, like wind, solar power, hydroelectricity and biomass, account for 14 percent. Nuclear energy accounts for another 5percent. Different countries have different combinations of energy sources, while balancing the needs of the economy with environmental concerns.
Nature’s energy is available in a variety of forms like sun, wind waves, and ocean. When harnessed, and transformed into more efficient forms of energy, like electricity or heat, these are known as primary sources. When those energies are exhausted, they become nonrenewable energy sources.
The environment is damaged by many fossil fuels, in addition to other energy sources that aren’t renewable. Mining oil, for instance, can destroy the forests of the earth. Fracking (hydraulic fracture) can lead to water pollution and earthquakes. The combustion of coal releases carbon dioxide, which contributes to global warming.
Fortunately that many of the most promising energy sources are renewable and sustainable. Hydropower, wind and solar for instance, could generate electricity without the need to search for new resources.
Other renewable energy sources are gaining momentum, such as tidal and wave power. However, to be used in a large-scale manner they must have effective distribution networks. They need to be constructed and operate with the use of non-renewable energy sources. These sources are not able to meet the majority of our energy demands. It is important to keep in mind that the costs for renewable energy equipment have dropped significantly over the last few years, and their efficiency is growing rapidly.
